Start the day admiring a stunning sunrise and beautiful 360 degree views of the surrounding Selwyn Ranges from Telstra Hill. Walk, run, ride or drive up the steep, yet manageable hill, terminating at either of the two city view lookouts; the Telstra Hill Tower to the left or the Bureau of Meteorology Weather Tower to the right.
In need of a coffee… return to town and enjoy breakfast at one of several cafés or hotels. We recommend The Xtra Mile located at 71 Camooweal Street, right in the heart of town.
After a relaxing breakfast, head out to Powerhouse Road for a round of golf or a hit at the driving range at the Mount Isa Golf Course.
If you prefer to admire the outback’s rugged landscape, from the comfort of the indoors, rather than hit a small ball in it, then a visit to one of Mount Isa’s Art Galleries might be for you. Mount Isa’s red dust spinifex country has been immortalised and made famous by resident artist, Rowena Paine Murphy. You may notice many of her works around town and a visit to her art gallery and studio located on Duchess Road is not to be missed. For gallery opening times Rowena can be contacted on facebook. Many other artistic works can be viewed at either the gallery located upstairs at the Outback at Isa or at Arts on Alma, both highly recommended.
For a morning snack or ‘smoko’ we encourage you to visit Café on Pamela, located on Pamela Street to experience not only delicious looking, but delicious tasting cupcakes made by Buttercream Queen Cakes.
Take a self-guided Drive around town to view Local Landmarks. Begin by travelling down Duchess Road (past Rowena Paine Murphy’s studio) turning right into an unnamed road at -20.775085,139.497224. This unnamed road will take you towards the Mica Creek Power Station across the Leichhardt River (please be cautious during the wet season and do not attempt to cross if flooded). The power station is natural gas using 12 turbines. Follow Mica Creek Road back into town, taking the Boulia Mount Isa Road for a visit to Casa Grande. This Queensland Heritage listed Spanish Mission style home located on Nettle Street was built in 1949 for the then General Manager of Mount Isa Mines, Julius Kruttschnitt II and played host to Queen Elizabeth when she visited Mount Isa in 1970.
Continue on your Mount Isa Deluxe City Tour Drive to witness the live workings of the Mount Isa Copper, Zinc and Lead Mines. Turn right off Railway Avenue into Mine Road and follow the road around stopping prior to the bridge. Walk across the bridge to see large tip trucks being filled with hot molten slag waste and driven under the bridge out to the dumping pit. Follow Mine Road around to look down upon the Blackrock Open Cut Mine. Remember this is an active mine and whilst travelling on the mine lease roads take extra caution and obey all warning and no entry signs.
Head back towards town turning left onto Railway Avenue and follow the road, which becomes the Barkly Highway in the direction of Camooweal. Located about 20 kilometres out of town is the George Fisher Lead, Zinc and Silver Mine. Drive down the main road until you reach the gates and can view the main people moving shaft. The drive out to the mine is very picturesque and a great opportunity to take in the landscape. Be mindful of stray cattle crossing the road and try to avoid using the road around the times of 7am and 7pm as these are the major shift change times.
Venture back into town and grab lunch to take with you out to Lake Moondarra. We would suggest a classic meat pie from Grants Bakery on Camooweal Street at the Colonial Shopping Centre, definitely the best pies in the Isa. Once stocked with food or bbq supplies follow the signs out to Lake Moondarra or the Dam as affectionately called by locals. In late 2017 a new paved and signed bike path out to the lake was completed, providing an option to traverse the 15 kilometre journey by your own stream. Lake Moondarra is Mount Isa’s main water supply, but is also used for recreational activities including fishing, boating, stand up paddle boarding and swimming. Try your hand at Dragon Boating every Saturday afternoon at 4pm, at the time of writing it was only $10 per person to have a go in a 14 person boat, so you won’t be alone and are well instructed by the team. Head up to the look out and journey across the dam wall, then venture down the road to Warrina Park, more appropriately known as Peacock Park, that incorporates playground and bbq facilities.
After you have explored Lake Moondarra, hit the road again for an indigenous cultural experience. This area called the Three Sisters, also known as Three Steps or the Cascades represents the boundary between the rain dreaming and the emu dreaming in indigenous mythology. This spiritual place is located close to Lake Moondarra, however for directions you will need to complete an internet search, taking note the track can be rough after heavy rains and has the potential to flood.
After a bit of Rest and Relaxation back at Sunset Tourist Park we would highly recommend the restaurant at the Ibis Styles for dinner, located on the corner of Rodeo Drive and Camooweal Street. At the time of writing they are open Monday to Friday only and bookings are essential.
After dinner head up to the Mount Isa Look Out to view the city by night, taking in the lights of the mine. It’s an impressive sight and iconically Mount Isa.
