  • Founded by Edmund Kennedy in 1848 and Dalrymple in 1873, limited access prevented exploration
  • ​Officially surveyed in 1939 as Kenny, however the locals called it South Mission Beach
  • Named after Hull River Aboriginal Settlement or "The Mission" located at South Mission Beach in 1914
  • Population of 4,000 approximately in 2016
  • Region of Bingil Bay, Mission Beach, Wongaling Beach and South Mission Beach, 14kms of coast
  • Gateway to Tropical Rainforest, Great Barrier Reef and Dunk, Bedarra, Timana, Wheeler, Coombe, Smith, Bowden and Hudson Islands (Family group of Islands)
  • Murray, Tully and Hull Rivers
  • Dyirbal, Girramay and Gulngay people of the Dyiru language
