...Little did we know the cruise ship disembarking at Yorkeys Knob takes a long time, which made us 10 minutes late for the tour. Fortunately the staff were amazing, they went out of their way and helped us greatly to catch up with the group. Mossman Gorge is 80 kilometres north of Cairns and was declared part of the Daintree rainforest in 1967, it is home to the Kuku Yalanji people. The tour was run by a bloke called Mooks, he took us through many bush skills, and food you could eat if you get stuck in the rainforest. The tour finished off with a feed of damper and a cup of tea, although the morning was busy trying to get to Mossman on time, it ended up being a lovely day with Lorraine and Helen.
The walk got entertaining when we encountered a massive feral pig on our way back, neither of us knew how to deal with it so we turned the other way and headed back towards the dirt road at the end of the track (our car was at the start of the track). We weren’t sure how far we had to go to detour around the track and get back to our car, thankfully a nice lady who drove by, pulled up and took us out to the bitumen road and pointed us in the right direction. From then we just walked, through small towns, a caravan park and a range that eventually headed towards Mossman, our 12 kilometre walk turned into a 23 kilometre hike, a couple of random strangers pulled over offering us a lift, others drove past wondering what we were doing. With no money for food (we left our wallets in the car), the sun going down and on our last few drops of water, we called it quits at the bottom of the range and called a taxi. Thankfully someone could pick us up from the random location we were at (bottom of Mossman-Mount Molloy road) because we would of been in for another 20 kilometres of walking. After we'd retrieved the car we made our way into Port Douglas for a huge feed of poutine.
